Are Virtual Fonts Obsolete?
نویسنده
چکیده
Virtual fonts (VF) were created to address a shortcoming of TEX fonts: each slot address occupied exactly one byte, so there were no more than 256 different characters per font. Later, when PostScript fonts got popular, VF became the way of choice for integration of these fonts with TEX. Today new font formats can be directly read by the modern TEX engines, and, for example, X E TEX can directly work with system fonts. There is a temptation to declare VF obsolete. In this paper we show that there is much more in VF than just making PostScript fonts available for TEX. There are various tricks developed over the years that use VF technology to achieve new striking effects. The aim of this paper is to convince the users to learn how to employ VF, and to convince the programmers of the new engines to provide the interface for font manipulation comparable to VF.

The SL~IQX 'invisible' fonts are currently produced by a special set of METAFONT files; an alternative method of generating 'invisible' versions of any font is presented, using virtual fonts.

A package for preparing parameterized outline fonts in PostScript [6] Type 1 [8] format is described. The package makes use of METAPOST [3], awk [4], and T1utils [5], therefore is supposed to be easily portable to various computer platforms. Its beta version along with a sample font (Knuth’s logo font) is available from: ftp://bop.eps.gda.pl/pub/metatype1 keywords: outline fonts, scalable fonts...
متن کاملlayout using PostScript fonts
When Donald Knuth made virtual fonts part of the general TEX repertoire at the end of 1989 151, at the same time as extending both rn and METAFONT to support 8-bit input, it immediately became obvious that the world needed a new standard for the layout of fonts. This is not the place to review the discussion of what characters should be in a generalized 256 character text font (see 14, 3]), nor...
